The Touch of Kupris (The Touch of Kupris on his Heart), fragment from the famed Frieze of Kupris, originally from the Temple of Kupridios (rebuilt in Roman era at Tirgæu). 434-430 BCE. Veined white marble, 34 x 48.2 cm (13 x 19"). Courtesy of the Imrie Gallery, London.

This fragment from the famed Frieze of Kupris is the hand of Damatrios (the male aspect of Demeter) as he is about to reach out to the goddess Kupris (Venus) and take her hand, in the romantic story of their inspiring love for each other. This moment is captured in stone just as Damatrios' fingers are reflexively extending in the realization that Kupris is his love. The frieze was unearthed in an archæological dig in 1968 - 1972 and was sent to various parts of the world for cleaning and restoration. The entire frieze was feared lost in a shipping accident in the Atlantic Ocean in 1987 but pieces are now being recovered 14 years later after the exact location of the wreck was found.
