The Niche of St. Eudoxov, section from the cathedral's apse; decorated niche including fragment of original St. Eudoxov statue, now missing. 1194 CE. Dressed fieldstone and limestone, 1.13 x 1.29 m (51 x 44.5"). Courtesy of the Gallery of Modern Antiquities, London.

St. Eudoxov was the patron saint of scapegoats, giving solace to those who fell prey to others bent on shifting blame. The window next to the niche overlooked the Witte Waar (White River or White Water), a large stream that Patre William Eudoxov, a cleric in his earlier life, regularly bathed in, until the river flooded and swept him away. He was noted to have drowned without inhaling the waters.
