Queen Sarah and the Artisan, fresco and remains of a stone border from the east wall of the Great Hall. 985 CE. Dressed fieldstone, lime fresco and coarse grout, 1.05 x 2.10 m (39 x 83"). Courtesy of the Gallery of Modern Antiquities, London

This section of the Great Hall fresco was sheltered from the elements when the adjoining wall above it collapsed, burying and protecting parts of the fragile lime plaster and its delicate imagery. This fresco shows part of the legend of the meeting of Queen Sarah and King Mendax, depicted as an artisan. The top section of the fresco show fanciful creatures frolicking in the fields.
